Systems Change, not climate change. That demand has been emblazoned on many placards marched down streets in recent protests. And for good reason.
Our current systems confuse the mechanism of the economy, with the goal of the economy.
Most of you reading this might agree that the meaning in life is not derived from the accumulation nor spending of money. Most of us would define a good life as one with abundant connection to people and places, a sense of meaning and purpose, and of course, underpinned with equitable opportunity to ensure our basic security not just in the immediate moment, but for the foreseeable future.
The economy is a system designed by people that is meant to work for people and the planet upon which it all depends, not the other way around. So, how do we go about addressing the design flaws?
The more people understand that everything is connected and we break down silos to ensure that policy and practice address that truth, the more progress we will make in systems change. But, systemic change does not fit into a sound bite or meme, which is why we gathered people who we felt could explain how Work is a Green Issue.
We invite you to watch the replay of our live event. Where Beth Thoren, Deputy Chief Executive of Client Earth and Initiator of National Nature Service, and GREEN entrepreneurs and activists Alice Bordini Staden (green finance) and Louis Howell (youth leadership) discussed the future of GREEN Work with GREEN Peer, Natalie Bennett.
In the conversation, we discussed how all actions are political and how we might find the intersections and connections in the work we are doing in different areas of society so we can support one another and make more impact in promoting the systems change that we urgently need to make our working lives more equitable, meaningful and regenerative.
There is so much about life that humans can not control (despite making valiant attempts at it for the past 12,000 years!) But we can decide that we will design systems to ensure, within the best of our ability , that everyone has equal opportunity to live without fear of want for work, home, food and healthcare. The building blocks for living a dignified life, with agency and choice.
We need your help in building this GREENER future, through donating to our cause, becoming a member of our party, or becoming a green friend you’re supporting, and becoming a part of, the work that we do.
We know that Better IS Possible, because better is already happening in GREEN corners all around us. With systems that function as they are defined, “A set of things working together as parts of a mechanism or an interconnecting network; a complex whole”. Everything is connected. And the economy is the system that (should) serve all. Let’s build one to be proud of, together.
