This month, we screen the documentary by Gadfly Productions called: ‘The Cost of Living’, followed by a Q&A hosted by Green Party Peer, (Baroness) Jenny Jones, filmmakers Sean Blacknell and Wayne Walsh of Gadfly Productions, Professor A.C Grayling CBE (featured in the film), and Jonathan Williams of UBI Lab Wales.
‘The Cost of Living’ documentary explores the current socio-economic state of Britain and considers how the idea of a basic income could minimise poverty and the sociological toll of a growing precarious class. The film focuses on the feasibility of a basic income, John Rawls’ theory of justice, automation and ultimately asks the question: should there still be a cost attributed to survival?
If you missed our screening, you can rent the film for £1.99 via THIS LINK and watch the trailer below
THE GREEN PARTY SUPPORTS UBI
Universal Basic Income has been part of Green Party policy for decades because we believe that financial security is a key building block of a good society. It is a policy that offers genuine social security to everyone while sweeping away the bureaucracy of the current welfare system.
On all levels of Government where Greens hold power, Universal Basic Income is being touted as a solution:
In the House of Lords, our Green Peers, Natalie Bennett and Jenny Jones argue on the side of Basic Income throughout their work.
In Parliament, our Green MP, Caroline Lucas has been tabling motions to convince the Government to commission research on UBI since 2016.
Local Green councillors are hard at work too. Recently, Green Party councillor Jamie Osborn, who initiated UBI Lab Norfolk, has helped get our motion passed calling on the UK Government to pilot a universal basic income in Norwich. Last year, Islington became the first London Borough to back a UBI trial following a motion proposed by Green Party councillor Caroline Russell.
In Wales, Jonathan Williams and Liam Richards, UBI Lab Wales worked with Members of the Senedd to pass a symbolic motion – signed by Wales Green Party candidates and leaders – backing a UBI trial, which reached more than 100 signatures across the political spectrum.
