The GREEN Party started out as the PEOPLE Party in 1972. Although our name has changed – twice – today’s Green Party remains true to our founding ideal, that we are here for people (and the planet).
We GREENS are a truly democratic organisation, run by and for our members. And what an extraordinarily diverse, fascinating and multi-talented lot we are, drawn from every age group, walk of life and area of the country.
Many of us are frontline activists and campaigners, taking the Green message out into our communities. Some of us seek and win elected office at local and national level. Vast numbers of us show our support in other less visible but equally crucial and powerful ways, through our conversations, choices and lifestyles. What unites us is our absolute commitment to standing up for what we believe in and doing what we can, wherever and whenever possible, to help bring about the changes so urgently needed in our society and the wider world.
As well as making policy, our members also provide our funding: we’re not beholden to big corporate donors, lobby groups or other vested interests. As a political movement, the Green Party is a true reflection of our members: independently minded, socially aware, thoughtful, egalitarian, imaginative, creative, fearless and open-hearted. If any of that sounds like you, then you’re already one of us.
For me, being a “Green Activist” is a compulsion. If you have such a strong vision of how life could be better, as I and most Green Party members do, then getting involved in election campaigning turns out to be only a means to an end: becoming a Green Councillor is how you can then actually make the Green Vision a reality, even if only in small but practical ways. I know that my Town Council wouldn’t have declared a Climate Emergency and switched to a renewable energy supplier this year if I hadn’t been elected, so I know I’ve made a difference and that’s what it’s all about.
