The Green Party has highlighted the government’s failure to adequately respond to flooding.
As Storm Christoph caused devastation in parts of England and Wales, Green Party Deputy Leader Amelia Womack has said the UK and Welsh governments must immediately implement a long-term plan to improve natural flood defences and reassess planning regulations which still allow for new buildings on flood plains.
“Every year, flooding across the UK impacts families and businesses. To add to this devastation, this year it comes 10 months into a global pandemic putting added strain on individuals and communities”.
As Beth Thoren, Initiator of National Nature Service and DCEO of ClientEarth said in a recent Green Party event, “[for] every £1 we spend in flood protection prevents £10 being lost in flood damage”. The government knows better, and must do better. You can watch the full replay from Beth’s visit with us HERE.
